"...by the 4th of July." Or so the saying goes.

How is the composition? Color? I wish I could have had a silver reflector on Chad's face... besides his being too dark, what could be better with the lighting? Any other comments?

Nikon D40
f/1.8 50mm lens
exposure time 1/500
f/4.5
ISO 200

Nice shot, Ty! I really like the perspective this is shot from.

The one recommendation I have is that I would try to take more advantage of the speed of that 50mm. Maybe try shooting at like f/2.8 to suggest a more vast background. Not that there is anything wrong with what you did at f/4.5 - it looks great and the depth of field is very nice. But I do think that a little more blur in the background could add some depth to this photo. Just IMO.

Also, I really like the lighting. Besides Chad's face being a little dark, it's very even for the most part, and you have a nice rim light around Chad that makes him pop out from the background.

Good photo, man!

Thanks!

Okay. I was actually closing it down thinking that it would be better to have a deeper depth of field. I'll shoot more open next time. Smile

I used a 2x3 white board, which didn't prove quite as reflective as I had hoped. I'll (hopefully) be getting a couple 5-in-1 reflectors soon!

Due to some council on another photo forum, I cropped the photo to a square. What do you think of the crop?

Yeah, and don't get me wrong, it definitely works in your shot. But I think since the focus is not on the landscape but one object in the landscape it could be an effective way to show that he's immersed in the environment.

The crop looks fine. Personally (and this is simply a personal preference), I don't like using squares for my photos. I like the idea of having wide or tall images. But that all comes down to a photo by photo decision. I do think the crop on this image adds a bit of depth and even a little mystery. With the expression on Chad's face and the absence of the foreground, there are some questions for a viewer and it adds a little bit of interest to the photograph. It's almost like Chad is saying, "Where am I and how did I get here?"

You only see that because you're so used to Chad's masterful sense of direction!!! Wink

I really enjoyed seeing this picture and reading the commentary. Good job, both of you! Thanks for sharing on CMF!

lol! You crack me up, Sage. Razz

I did some color tweaking on the photo – I didn't realize just how much green was reflecting onto Chad until I corrected it!

@Sage - LOL, wow... Very Happy

@Ty - Lookin' good, dude! Actually, I think the crop accomplished the same thing as if you had shot with a faster f/ stop. It looks much deeper now.

No...we managed to avoid the cornfields that trip. Someday though...I'd enjoy that!
